Robot name:

UFO

Year of creation:

2011

Category:

Featherweight (30lb)

Type:

Shell spinner

Story:

Project based on the robot Butcher. Both are Shell Spinners, robots that rotate their armor, and have a very high combat power. In addition to the spinning body, three steel teeth were attached to the UFO, creating in it an extremely powerful and destructive weapon. The robot uses two motors to rotate its tube, which weighs around 11lb.

The teeth that get stuck in the tube are made of S1 Tool Steel. For the construction of the bearings and chassis nylon and aluminum were used, while for the shafts the 4340 steel was used.

The name UFO (Unknown Featherweight Object) was given after a joke between the members, who said that the robot looked like a flying saucer. To make it even more similar, blue LED’s were placed that flash while the robot moves and rotates. His design received the trophy for Best Design at the 4th Winter Challenge.

In order to obtain the entire mechanical body of the robot with a single piece, a 7075-T6 aluminum block was machined, the same material being used for the disc body, a characteristic that is resistant to fractures, since the suffered impact dissipates throughout the body evenly.
